Tantric Sex
This week there's more practical homework than reading. Contents: Exercises · Introduction to Tantric Sex · Heart-Opening Path & Letter-Writing · Breathwork (optional) · Setting the Stage (optional).
1. Exercises
Before you start reading, jot down in a few sentences: what do you think tantric sex is? What do you feel learning it will give you?
Every morning this week, reflect on: what you'll do to connect with your personal sensuality (dance in the kitchen to your favourite song when no one's looking, take 3 minutes to notice where you most enjoy feeling water fall on your body, go to a yoga class...), and what you're grateful for.
Masturbation ritual (homework)
Light candles and incense, bring flowers, and clean your sacred temple space — wherever you'll enjoy your self-pleasuring ritual. Make it comfortable and joyful. We'll be removing all external stimulation (porn, vibrators). Start covering your naked body in oil, massaging as you go.
For men: start from your genitals — gentle, slow, soft. Bring yourself to 60–80% excitement, then spread that energy by massaging other parts of the body (chest, legs, arms). Repeat, riding the waves up and down several times, always spreading the massage from genitals outward. Use deep breath, movement and sound to help move the energy through your body. After 3–5 repetitions, jump into a pool or shower, move, dance or sing to spread the energy further. We're trying not to ejaculate in this practice — if it happens, that's okay, it's just not the goal this time.
For women: go on a date with yourself. Bathe, dress up, do your hair, compliment yourself. Dance. Do something you'd do for a partner, but just for you. Slowly undress, and begin making love with yourself — tell yourself what a queen you are. You are your own best lover.
Have a mirror where you can see your whole yoni (Sanskrit for vulva, "sacred space"). Get to know it through the mirror before you start. Use a natural body butter or oil that makes you feel like a goddess. Gently massage your arms, legs, belly and breasts. Give yourself a long, loving breast massage, then slowly move toward the outside of your yoni — outer lips, inner lips, the entrance — watching in the mirror how it opens like a flower. Return again and again to massaging the whole body, sometimes pleasuring your yoni, sometimes spreading that loving, exciting energy outward to breasts, arms, legs, belly. You can repeat "I love you, body" as you go. Bring yourself close to orgasm, then shift how you're touching yourself to awaken other parts of the body.
2. Introduction to tantra and tantric sex
Tantra is about expanding our perception so we can perceive more of our infinite being. It can be done alone, or in relationship — let me repeat that, it can be done SOLO.
Tantra says your sexual energy is your spiritual energy. Sexual energy craves union with another — merging, deep heart connection. This whole path is about how to go into the heart, and feel that connection not just with a lover, but with everything around us. This is really about opening the heart.
Every form of energy in the universe has polarity — two opposite charges. Masculine and feminine, yin and yang, whatever you want to call it. This is the dance of attraction between two polar opposites, and it starts with yourself: you need to become whole with yourself first, before entering relationship with another.
When we send sexual energy up through the body, we're lighting up the chakras. The orgasm is never the goal — it's a tool. When we orgasm, we transcend the ego and the mind, moving into a sense of oneness. As we surrender into that deep state, we open the gates. If you can make love for several hours and meditate while doing it, you go into far more depth with your partner than just physical release.
Tantra isn't just about human love, attachment and ego. You know how, when you're in love, the sun shines brighter and everything smells prettier? That's coming from you. Tantra is about bringing that state of consciousness into everyday living. It isn't saying ego is bad — it's saying you need to master it. Through orgasm, you raise your vibration; every time your body experiences it, your frequency rises. This is a path of purification.

There's a wonderful video introduction to tantric sex (1 hr 40 min) — the most valuable parts are 0–1:18 (introduction), 13:00–49:26 (13:00–38:15 is tantra for penis-owners, 38:15–49:26 for vulva-owners — ideally watch both), and 57:53–1:24:00 (relationships, foreplay, rituals, breathwork). His recommended resources are covered in the last 5 minutes, if you want to go deeper.
Polarities: masculine and feminine
Tantra is about integrating and balancing the masculine and feminine energies that reside within all of us. In Western culture, feminine energy has become associated with women and masculine with men, which is misleading — whether you're male or female-identifying, you carry both within you, and depending on who you are, one might be stronger than the other. Tantra reconciles this duality by integrating the unconscious masculine and unconscious feminine parts of ourselves, to become more whole.
3. Tantra is a heart-opening path
What does an "open heart" mean? Being aware of your feelings. Being gentle. Being sensitive to emotion — open to crying, laughing. It can feel like a tingling in the body. You feel love for everything: humans, grass, air, trees. A deeper, more meaningful life.
The heart is about intuition — a felt experience that doesn't translate into cognitive language. It can't be explained by the mind, the way a mother simply feels something when she sees her newborn. It's a different dimension.
Everyone's heart is closed for different reasons, so how we open it is deeply individual. In general, though, the key is practising gratitude. Gratitude lets us appreciate the beauty in everything — to perceive more, to see the details, to stay present. If you don't already have a daily gratitude practice, consider this a foundational step on the tantric path. Alongside it: accepting what is, seeing others as divine beings, unconditionally loving life itself.
Love // Fear
If we cultivate these things and open our hearts, what happens to fear and pain? If love is allowing, letting go, expansiveness — and fear is choosing ego, feeling not-good-enough, needing more, contraction, scarcity — then we can't have both at once. Love and gratitude can dissolve fear; fear, left unchecked, can envelop love. If we have fear about our health, we probably won't have gratitude for our current health. A fear of abundance can mean we're afraid something won't go well — which really means we're afraid of it going well.
Love and fear is a choice. It's easier, less vulnerable, to choose fear — cultural conditioning and old patterns make it feel "safer." How do we train the choice of love instead? It's a constant practice: gratitude, healing from trauma and conditioning (therapy helps), allowing yourself to open your heart, breathwork, nature, creativity, sex, movement.
Letter to the adaptive child (fear body)
Light a candle. We're going to write a letter to our fear body — the part that holds us back from intimacy. We'll call it the adaptive child.
What is the adaptive child? We all carry a fear body from past experiences or unfinished trauma still living in our bodies. It's created in response to something overwhelming at a young age — harshness we couldn't yet comprehend — and we develop a coping mechanism so we don't have to feel that overwhelm again: running from the situation, enduring it, or closing our heart.
Who's writing the letter? Our adaptive child is a rigid, black-and-white "kid's version" of an adult. Write this letter from the perspective of a functional adult — forgiving, loving, curious, calm, and understanding of the complexity of human experience.
What are we writing about? Give this an hour. What would let you go further into intimacy in your life right now, and what's blocking that? What's the one important experience that changed everything afterward — a time of overwhelm, or being deeply hurt? It might not be a single event, but something that unfolded over time. Give yourself time to feel into what that experience was like. How did you react? How did you change? What choices did it shape? Visualise it.
Address four things in the letter:
- What the adaptive child sorted out for you — thank it for what it gave you at the time ("you really saved me, you protected my autonomy, my overwhelm...")
- What it gave you going forward — drive, intelligence, discernment, ambition, a way of seeing the world
- What it cost you — share without judgment (self-connection, love, honesty with yourself, comfort from others...)
- What is the adaptive child afraid will happen if it stops "protecting" you?
Then close the letter as the mature, functional adult, present for both of you: "I'm here now, for both of us. I'll take care of us both. From now on, this is how my life is going to look..." Write about how you want your life, your relationships, your sexual life and intimacy to look going forward. What can you feel shifting inside you? What different choices can you start making?
This exercise gives perspective on the past, and on the strategies we've used to protect ourselves. Befriending our adaptive child lets us drop into deeper love-making and more profound intimacy — with ourselves, or with a partner. Bring your letter to the workshop.
4. Breathwork
Breath is powerful. Once you get into breathwork, you'll be able to move erotic energy around, which also means deeper, longer orgasms. Introduce breath techniques outside of erotic situations too, and you can bring "erotic energy" into more areas of life, not just sex.
Urban Tantra talks about how we simply don't breathe enough, and often hold our breath unconsciously during sex — but used consciously, tensing up and holding the breath can lead to incredible, full-body orgasms rather than ones confined to the genitals. Sound and movement help circulate energy too — feel free to make loud, passionate noises (which is linked to breath, since we breathe more when we make sound). Different breath types shift consciousness differently: some calm you, some energise you — mouth breathing charges you, nose breathing calms you.
Three types to practice for 5–10 minutes each (eyes open, set a timer):
- Circular breath — a continuous flow, no pause between inhale and exhale. Gentle mouth breathing, jaw relaxed, lips slightly parted, throat open. Imagine the breath as an unbroken circle (or, as a variation, in through the nose and out through the mouth, visualising an unbroken figure-eight). Any position works — sitting, standing, lying down. Great for circulating erotic energy through your body and between you and a partner.
- Breath of fire (only 1–2 minutes) — a kundalini yoga technique, rapid and continuous through the nose, best sitting or standing with a straight spine. Emphasis is on the exhale: push air out rapidly, pulling your navel to your spine; the inhale happens automatically as you release. Start with one breath every 2 seconds, working up to 1–2 per second. Builds heat, can be used before or during sex, wakes up your attention.
- Heart breath — yawn, and feel it open the back of your throat, stretching your whole mouth and face. Inhale through the mouth, letting it fall open slightly, gently but fully. Exhale without pushing — just let it fall out with a soft sigh, "ahhh."
Once these feel familiar, bring them into sex. You'll notice it takes longer to reach orgasm with conscious breathwork — that's good, it means you're spreading sexual energy through your whole body. Paying attention to your breath also makes it harder to spiral into "I can't come" or "am I doing this right" — you're simply more present. If thoughts do arise, practise witnessing them rather than following them.
Active meditation
Sometimes your thoughts are just chattering too much — active meditation can bring you into a state of relaxed, energised awareness, which is exactly where you want to be for conscious sex. Silliness matters here too: it frees us from illusions of control and self-importance, which expands the mind, spirituality and sex. Embrace any silliness that comes up — it's key to feeling expansive and alive.
This one's called the Exhilaration Meditation — best with eyes closed, to your own curated music. Set aside at least 15 minutes:
- 5–10 minutes of shaking — arms, hands, belly, thighs, legs, face — until the shaking shakes you. Add gibberish as you go: a repeated syllable ("blah blah blah" or "yak yak yak"), letting it evolve into a made-up language. Let it be fun.
- 5–10 minutes of dancing, any way you feel — move from your core, add whirling to left or right, eyes open but unfocused, starting slow and speeding up. When dizzy, slow down, whirl the other way, or close your eyes.
- 10–15 minutes sitting, lying, or just being still, eyes closed — focus on your heartbeat or breath to help balance any dizziness.
This won't eliminate all your negative feelings, but it opens and relaxes you so your feelings aren't so stuck. It also sensitises your emotional and physical body — you'll probably notice more feeling in your hands. That alive, awake, sensitive state is ideal for learning and practising touch.
Other tips
- Tantra doesn't need a free 5-hour slot — 20 minutes of conscious practice counts.
- Let go of expectations or goals. Sex might be angry, scary, or sad. Release performance anxiety — don't try to be perfect.
- "Moving while sexually aroused easily transforms tension, habits, and wakes up more pleasure in our bodies. I even encourage people to move as they receive touch in massage. Our bodies need to dance our arousal." Joseph Kramer
On making noise: why have you never heard your neighbours having sex? Why have they never heard you? Do you believe your partner should make noise, but you shouldn't? Why is that? Try masturbating as loudly as you can — pump your hips to the rhythm of your breath, open your mouth and throat wide, breathe hard, moan, yell, scream. See how much noise you and your partner can make next time you make love. And smile when you see your neighbour.
Sexual energy
Tantra is sexual energy. All you have to do is notice it, and it starts to move — it's an actual physical energy, not just a desire. There's no real difference between sexual energy and creative energy, or work energy, or taking-out-the-trash energy — it's all life-force energy (kundalini, or chi, in some traditions). You move it around the body through movement, touch and thought; it starts at the base of the spine and spirals up to the pineal gland.
How do you know where sexual energy sits in your partner? Listen to the sounds they're making — low-pitched groans mean it's concentrated in the lower chakras (pelvic area); breathy, mid-pitched "ahhh" sounds mean it's moved up to the heart and throat; high-pitched "eeee" sounds mean it's around the third eye. You can also watch how they move — bumping and grinding hips, small back-bends, head shaking or thrown back. Noticing this gradually builds your awareness of how sexual energy travels.
The intention in tantra isn't to leave the body for some "higher state," but to drop into the body more deeply and completely — achieved by circulating energy around it. If you body-scan and notice which parts feel shadowy or vague, that tells you energy might be stuck there. Breath is a great way to get it moving again; sometimes you'll need actual movement too — eye rolls, jaw massages, head rolls, cat/cow, hip floor raises (even adding a figure-eight motion with your hips).
Think of sex as a dance. Our bodies are always moving, even when still — heartbeat, digestion. As you move, feel each movement from inside, within your abdomen, and extend it outward. Over and over in tantra, you'll combine breath, PC squeezes (the pelvic/kegel muscle), movement, awareness and imagination to build and circulate sexual energy.
An exercise for moving sexual energy in the body:
- Put on music that makes you want to move your hips.
- Stand feet hip-distance apart, knees slightly bent.
- Breathe, relax your jaw, inhale gently through the mouth, exhale with a soft "ahhh."
- Gently add backward body rolls — like an ocean wave, pelvis swinging forward first, the rest of the body following.
- Add a PC squeeze with each wave.
- Put your awareness in your genitals. Each squeeze, imagine sexual energy releasing from there, carried up the front of your body by your breath, and back down your spine to your genitals again.
- Keep going. Let it be sexy — but try to let go, so the moment is doing you.

5. Partner tantra: setting the stage
Think about how you want the room to feel — sounds, comfort (cushions), visuals (bright cloths, flowers, photos, fairy lights, feathers, mirrors), good food, good smells. Comfort and music are usually the minimum. Don't default straight to the bedroom — be creative. Tidy up first; clutter is psychically disturbing. Lighting matters enormously — candles. Music doesn't have to be soft and instrumental — intense rhythmic drumming works too, or anything heart-opening. The key is rhythm and flow: does it make you want to move? Hard, soft, fast and slow all have their place. Prepare a few playlists so you can shift with your mood; avoid violent music, and generally avoid lyrics in a language you understand (they pull you into your head). For strong, fast beats: Babatunde Olatunji's Drums of Passion.
Burn some sage — it has antiseptic properties that help purify the air, and it's worth taking a moment to enjoy waving the smoke. Put a futon or yoga mat on the floor — it's a better tantric space than a bed, safer and more conducive to staying present and awake. As for what to wear: tantra favours loose, flowing fabric like sarongs over tight corsets, but wear what you like, as long as you can breathe and move freely.
Props, if you want them: feathers, fur, satin, chocolate, fruit, essential and massage oils, hot candle wax, floggers, blindfolds, earplugs, ice, vibrators, and so on. Toys are never the focus — just a tool, like breath. You might organise props by the sensation they produce (even map that against your partner's erotic blueprint). There are dozens of unexplored sensation-devices in every room of the house — try picking 6 random kitchen utensils and see what range of sensation each one can produce.
Make sure you're rich in the four elements: Air (good ventilation), Fire (candles or incense), Water (nearby, for drinking or bathing), and Earth (food that's sexy and nourishing, flowers, or essential oils in a diffuser).
A nice way to begin is with a grounding hug — one hand on their lower back, their hand on your upper/middle back, breathing your belly into theirs, imagining you're grounding your partner into the earth. From there, move into a shake (as in the active meditation above), or vibrate/jiggle each other's body starting at the head and working down, then switch. You could give each other mini shoulder massages, just to release tension.

In the live session, we'll experience a tantric ritual together with tea, body butter, flowers and herbs, and some multi-sensory play building on everything above.
Vamos a retirar toda estimulación externa (porno, vibradores).
Eres tu propia mejor amante.

¿Qué elecciones distintas puedes empezar a tomar?
Joseph Kramer
