Why Good Sex Isn't Actually What You Want

Here's my pep talk. (This was meant for Week 1, but better late than never!)

The work here is so much more than just about having good sex. Often the problem isn't always the problem — there's usually something underneath it. Why do you want good sex, and what is that actually going to bring you? What's underneath why you're not having good sex?

Remember: how you show up in the bedroom is how you show up in the rest of your life, and vice versa. What happens to you sexually, and how you feel about your sexuality, isn't just what happens in bed after 11pm at night. How we relate to sex is also how we relate to our triggers — notice when those happen, because they can trigger a fight, flee or freeze response, and then we act out in ways we're not proud of.

Sexuality is about how we let people in. It's how we understand the layers of shame built up over many years. It's making sense of, and picking apart, everything we've been taught, the stories we've been telling ourselves, and the societal messages we've absorbed. Even though I want all of us to have amazing sex (whatever that means for you), this is exactly why I don't focus on teaching great orgasms. Your sexuality isn't just about your genitals. :)

It's about what you call your vulva, your relationship with your own genitals, how we talk about them in our culture, or any numbness or pain we feel. It's about past difficult experiences, what you're ashamed of, how you feel about your body, how worthy you feel of pleasure in it. What were you taught growing up about sex? What do you want to replace? How do you want to show up sexually? What do you want that isn't just "good sex"? What is having good sex actually going to give you, beyond orgasms and pleasure — a deeper sense of connection with your partner? More confidence? A feeling of being worthy of real pleasure (rather than feeling like a human sock)?

Anyway! Just some thoughts for you to reflect on around your deeper journey in sexuality. :)
